Dr. Sherry Rankins-Robertson, department chair and professor of writing and rhetoric, University of Central Florida; faculty fellow, Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum, AAC&U

Already Smarter is a standout blueprint for learners, educators, and coaches seeking to build the habits, mindset, and confidence essential for active, lifelong learning. Dr. Jeff Bergin skillfully bridges cutting-edge learning theory with real-world application, making research both accessible and actionable. This is exemplified in the book’s ‘Simple Strategy’ sections—concise, practical steps that translate complex concepts into clear, usable actions. Particularly compelling is the book’s emphasis on setting meaningful, motivating goals that help learners align their efforts with personal values and long-term aspirations.

Equally powerful is Bergin’s integration of the mind–body connection, including guidance on rest, movement, breathing, and mindfulness. He makes a compelling, evidence-backed case that how we feel physically and emotionally profoundly influences how well we learn. This holistic approach reinforces that effective learning depends not only on intellect and willpower but also on structure, self-awareness, and intentional strategy.

In an era of rapid technological change—defined in part by the meteoric rise of AI-powered learning tools—Already Smarter arrives as a timely and essential resource. It offers practical, research-driven techniques to help learners across higher education and workforce development avoid becoming passive consumers of technology and instead become empowered, intentional users of both emerging tools and their own cognition.

More than a book, Already Smarter is a comprehensive tool kit for navigating a lifetime of learning with clarity and confidence. It will serve as a trusted resource for students, educators, mentors, and workforce professionals at every stage of the learning journey.”

PJ Henry, PhD, global network associate professor of psychology, NYU Abu Dhabi

Already Smarter is more than a book—it’s a generous, deeply human invitation to rediscover the learner within. Jeff Bergin writes with the clarity of a researcher, the soul of a coach, and the wisdom of someone who has walked this path himself. His voice is both compassionate and compelling, reminding us that learning isn’t just a skill—it’s a lifeline to our potential, asking us to elevate our own human experience.

I’ve seen firsthand Jeff’s unwavering belief in people’s capacity to grow. That belief is a clear theme in every chapter, from dismantling limiting beliefs to designing smart habits and championing others. If you have ever felt stuck, underestimated, or unsure where to begin, this is a great place to start. It’s also for those of us who know the power of learning but need a nudge to reengage with it fully.

Jeff doesn’t just teach us how to learn—he shows us why it matters now more than ever. If you’re ready to stop saying ‘maybe later’ and start becoming who you’re meant to be, this book is your moment. Already Smarter is also a great book for parents helping to guide young adults. As the mother of five adult-ish children, this is an incredible tool to remind parents that everyone has their own potential and path.”
